Rachin Ravindra’s gutsy half-century kept New Zealand’s hopes alive as they chased a target of 369 to win the first Test against Australia in Wellington on Saturday.
At the end of three days, New Zealand came first with 111/3, while Ravindra was still unbeaten with 56* points and drew with Daryl Mitchell (12*).
Australia starts at 13/2, captained by Nathan Lyon (6*) and Usman Khawaja. The duo played brilliant innings to take Australia past the 50-run mark. However, Matt Henry and Glenn Phillips batted and were dismissed for 41 and 28 runs respectively. Australia attacked at 81/4.
Cameron Green (17*) and Travis Head (24*) then led Australia’s innings, making the score 113/4 at lunch.
In the second game, Phillips made good use of his temporary tenure, dismissing Green (34), Hyde (29), Mitchell Marsh (0) and Alex. Kes Carey’s (3) wicket was secured. Five important castles. Australia were bowled out for 164 and New Zealand targeted 369 to win the match.
In addition to Phillips, Henry (3/36) and Tim Southee (2/46) also contributed.
New Zealand’s score at tea is 15/1, Will Young (7* ) ) and Kane Williamson (0*) led the way.
In the last match Australia batted twice, Lyon leaving Williamson for just nine runs while Hyde left Young with Steve Smith for 15 runs. Then he caught an incredible turnover. New Zealand’s score is 59/3.
Ravindra and Mitchell then came together to form a crucial partnership that enabled New Zealand to finish the day without further losses.
