India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour discussed the unpredictable nature of Indian pitches ahead of the fourth Test against England, describing Ranchi’s pitch as a “typical Indian wicket” with cracks and spin.
With India leading the series 2-1, the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi is set to host the fourth match starting Friday. England bowler Olly Pope had earlier commented on the dry and cracked pitch, anticipating spin.
“Every time we play in India, there’s a question mark on the pitch. It’s a typical Indian wicket. There is no doubt that the pitch is dry and will offer turn. But predicting when and how much it will turn is difficult. We are prepared for different conditions, and the team composition will be adjusted accordingly,” Rathour said in the pre-match press conference.
India’s key bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been released from the squad, a decision Rathour explained was necessary to manage his workload.
“We would have liked Bumrah to play all the games, but that’s not advisable. His workload in the last three matches has been immense. Given our schedule, it made sense to give him a break. He is physically fine,” Rathour mentioned.
Regarding Rajat Patidar’s struggling form, Rathour offered encouragement, indicating the middle-order batter might retain his spot. Patidar has faced challenges in the first few innings of his Test career.
“We’ve been having discussions with him [Patidar]. He needs to understand this is how the game works. He has batted well and earned his place. Two tough games don’t define him. He is a good player and can deliver impactful innings,” Rathour expressed.
Absent from India’s lineup will be KL Rahul due to a quadriceps injury. Rahul has been unable to recover and will miss his third consecutive Test. His availability for the final Test will depend on his recovery progress.
“As of now, Rahul is not fit. Only the medical team can confirm his status. We are focusing on the available squad,” Rathour clarified.
India’s updated squad for the 4th Test includes: Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), KS Bharat (WK), Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep.
