The time has come for Rishabh Pant to make his long-awaited return to cricket with the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, marking the culmination of hard work and patience. Reflecting on his journey over the past 14 months, DC skipper Rishabh Pant shared his emotions ahead of his highly anticipated comeback to the game.
“Feeling jittery, nervous, and excited all at once, but mostly just happy to be back playing professional cricket. I’m eagerly looking forward to stepping onto the field for my first game tomorrow,” Pant expressed during a pre-match press conference. “Every time I walk onto the field, it’s a unique experience. My focus has been on batting as much as possible and improving every day. I prefer to take each day as it comes and give my all,” Pant added optimistically.
Pant was initially drafted by Delhi Daredevils, later renamed Delhi Capitals following the involvement of the JSW Group as co-owners, in the IPL auction in 2015. He has been part of the Delhi Capitals squad since 2016 and assumed the role of captain in 2021.
The turning point in Pant’s journey occurred in December 2022 when he was involved in a near-fatal accident. While driving alone, the 25-year-old reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, causing his Mercedes to collide with a road divider and catch fire. Local bystanders, including a bus driver, rushed to his aid, and he was transported to a hospital in Roorkee before being transferred to Max Hospital in Dehradun for further treatment.
As Pant returns to the IPL, it is crucial for him to nurture his spirit and rediscover the joy of playing the game. “Our approach is simple – to go out there, enjoy ourselves, keep things uncomplicated, and give our all in every game,” Pant remarked.
Excitement is not limited to Pant alone. DC Head Coach Rickey Ponting also shared his anticipation for the return of their seasoned skipper, emphasizing Pant’s ability to bolster the team. “As we embark on another IPL season, the excitement is palpable, especially with our captain’s return. He is the backbone of this franchise, and his presence will undoubtedly strengthen our team,” Ponting stated.
He added, “After a week of training in Vizag, I can confidently say that Rishabh is back and raring to go. While he may feel a bit nervous playing his first match after a while, nerves signify the importance of the occasion. I’ve observed his form, and don’t be surprised if he produces something special tomorrow.”
The Delhi Capitals will kick off their IPL 2024 campaign against Punjab Kings on March 23 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.
