Ruben Amorim has been named as the new head coach for Manchester United and is set to join the club on November 11 after completing his duties with Sporting.
In an official statement, Manchester United on their website shared, “Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements. He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November.”
The statement added,”Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years. Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Ruben joins.”
Manchester United has appointed Ruben Amorim as their sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. The club plans to welcome the 39-year-old manager, along with his wife and two children, as they aim to improve their recent performances.
Sporting Lisbon confirmed United’s interest in Amorim on Tuesday, releasing an official statement. Reports suggest that the Red Devils may be prepared to pay over £8.3 million to release Amorim from his contract and bring him to Manchester.
Amorim married Maria Joao Diogo at the Palacio de S. Marcos church in Coimbra, Portugal, in 2013, with 160 guests in attendance. Maria, who has a telecommunications engineering degree, now runs her own interior design business. Her brother, Antero Henrique, was previously a target for Manchester United when they sought a sporting director in 2020 after he left his role at Paris Saint-Germain. Henrique played a role in bringing Neymar and Kylian Mbappe to PSG and later returned to the club in an executive role.
Many notable players attended Amorim’s wedding, including Nuno Gomes, Miguel Vitor, Hugo Viana, Quim, and former Brazilian international Luis Filipe, who is married to Maria’s sister.
Manchester United hopes to have Amorim in place by their Premier League match against Chelsea on Sunday. For their Carabao Cup game against Leicester on Wednesday, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is expected to step in as interim manager.
