5 Arrested in Connection with Death of Congress Worker in West Bengal

Five individuals were arrested after a Congress worker was allegedly beaten to death in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Wednesday night. The brutal attack occurred near the victim’s residence in Hathat Colony, Khargrabari-1 gram panchayat of Maynaguri.

Manik Roy, the victim, was reportedly tied to a tree and assaulted with iron rods and sticks by a group of attackers following a dispute with his neighbors, according to police reports.

Roy was rescued by a police team from Moinaguri and transported to Jalpaiguri Super Specialty Hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, the police confirmed.

Political Allegations and Arrests:

The family of Manik Roy, supported by West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) president Adhir Chowdhury, alleged that some of the assailants were affiliated with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). The police subsequently arrested five individuals in connection with the case on Thursday.

According to Roy’s family and Congress representatives, the victim had been forced to leave his home after receiving repeated threats from TMC-backed individuals following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. “Roy started to stay in Siliguri town where he worked as a security guard. Last Sunday, he returned home. But TMC-backed goons tied him to a tree and beat him up. This is the ruling party’s terror in Bengal,” Congress worker Soumya Aich Roy told The Indian Express.

Political Reactions:

WBPCC president Adhir Chowdhury condemned the attack, stating, “It seems that Congress workers have no right to pursue political activities in TMC-ruled West Bengal. We want a fair probe into the murder of Roy.”

In response, the ruling TMC criticized the Congress for politicizing the incident and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh expressed his condolences, telling news agency PTI, “It was an unfortunate incident and none of those involved should be spared. Any attempt to politicize this should be denounced.”

Ongoing Investigation:

As the investigation continues, both the Congress and TMC are calling for justice, albeit from different perspectives. The police are working to uncover the full details of the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
