The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) issued a directive on Friday, prohibiting the utilization of drinking water for non-essential activities such as vehicle washing, gardening, construction, and recreational purposes like water fountains.
Additionally, malls and theaters are instructed to restrict water usage solely for drinking, road construction, and cleaning purposes.
This measure is implemented in response to the severe water scarcity gripping both Bengaluru city and rural districts.
Citing Articles 33 and 34 of the BWSSB Act 1964, the board justified the ban on non-essential water usage. Violators of this order will face a fine of ₹5,000, with subsequent violations incurring an additional daily fine of ₹500 on top of the initial penalty. Furthermore, the BWSSB established a dedicated call center (1916) for addressing water-related queries and encouraging citizens to report any observed violations.
Over the course of the past week, concerted efforts have been undertaken by the state government, Bengaluru civic bodies, and district administration to confront the water scarcity gripping the city.
On Thursday, the Karnataka government took action by issuing a directive to cap the prices of private water tankers. Previously, a 6,000-litre water tanker ranged between ₹450 and ₹600. However, amidst the water crisis, prices surged to ₹2,000-₹3,000 within the city. In response, the government intervened and set fixed prices to address the issue.
5000/- Fine:
Additionally, the BWSSB enacted a mandate prohibiting the use of water for activities such as car washing, gardening, operating water fountains, construction work, maintenance, or recreational purposes. A fine of Rs 5,000 will be levied on individuals found violating this order. Malls and theaters are instructed to utilize water solely for drinking purposes.
