IMD Predicts Rising Temperatures In Bengaluru Until Ugadi, Rainfall Expected After Festival

IMD Predicts Rising Temperatures In Bengaluru Until Ugadi, Rainfall Expected After Festival

Residents of Bengaluru are in for some relief from the scorching heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light to moderate showers after the Ugadi festival on April 9.

With temperatures in the tech capital soaring above 35 degrees Celsius, the mercury is expected to climb further until Ugadi, but the IMD predicts a change in weather pattern soon after.

The IMD has predicted thunderstorms across Bengaluru in the second week of April, with rains likely to persist until the end of the month. A senior scientist from the IMD mentioned, “The city might experience light rains starting from Ugadi, with the intensity expected to escalate during that week. Thunderstorms and strong winds are also anticipated across the city in the latter half of April.”

However, residents might have to endure the scorching temperatures until the festival arrives. Bengaluru recorded 37 degrees Celsius on Thursday, which is three degrees above the April average. The temperature is projected to rise further by the weekend leading up to Ugadi.

Amidst this heatwave, many parts of Karnataka are facing similar conditions. Government officials reported 521 cases of heatstroke and two fatalities since March. Bagalkote and Kalaburagi districts each reported one heatstroke-related death between March 1 and April 3. Chikkaballapura, Bagalkote, Chitradurga, and Mandya are among the worst-affected districts, with 102, 69, 56, and 54 suspected heatstroke cases, respectively.

In anticipation of the heatwave continuing, the Karnataka state disaster management authority has released a set of guidelines. The IMD’s forecast suggests above-normal temperatures in most parts of the country, prompting the state government to issue a circular.

The circular advises residents to stay indoors during peak temperatures, especially between noon and 3 pm. It also recommends drinking plenty of water regularly, wearing light-colored and cotton clothes, using goggles and an umbrella/hat, and avoiding alcohol, tea, coffee, and other carbonated drinks that can dehydrate the body.

For pet owners, the circular suggests keeping pets in the shade and providing them with ample water to drink. People are also advised to seek medical help if they feel dizzy or sick due to the soaring temperatures.

As Bengaluru braces for the upcoming thunderstorms and relief from the heat, residents are encouraged to follow these guidelines to stay safe and healthy during the changing weather conditions.
