Jairam Ramesh Focuses On Karnataka’s Concerns Before PM Modi’s Rally Today

Ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s rally in Shivamogga, Karnataka, today, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has highlighted key issues in the state that he believes should be addressed during the rally.

In a statement posted on x, Jairam emphasized the critical water crisis affecting MGNREGA workers and others in Karnataka. He pointed out that 223 out of the state’s 236 talukas are facing drought conditions, leading to an acute water shortage. The state government has requested Rs 18,172 crore from the central government for drought relief.

Jairam questioned why the Modi government has not yet assisted Karnataka in addressing these pressing issues, particularly regarding drought relief and assistance for MGNREGA workers. He criticized the government for its failure to approve the extension of the MGNREGA scheme and release Rs. 1600 crores for wage payments to workers.

To mitigate the impact of the drought on the rural economy, the Karnataka government has proposed extending the MGNREGS working days from 100 to 150, as allowed during drought periods. Jairam urged the Modi government to take action promptly and ensure timely payment of wages to MGNREGA workers in Karnataka.

He also raised concerns about disruptions in the Anna Bhagya Scheme, which provides an additional 5 kgs of rice to poor families in Karnataka. Jairam accused the Modi government of initially agreeing to sell rice to the Karnataka government but later refusing to do so through the Food Corporation of India (FCI).

In addition to these issues, Jairam addressed the topic of “Dynasty” politics, highlighting the familial connections of key BJP leaders in Karnataka. He mentioned that Shivamogga, where the rally is taking place, is represented by B.Y. Raghavendra, the son of former BJP Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa. He also pointed out that the Karnataka State BJP Chief, B.Y. Vijayendra, is another son of B.S. Yediyurappa. Jairam called on the Prime Minister to clarify the BJP’s stance on dynasty politics during his visit to Shivamogga.

Overall, Jairam’s statements reflect the urgency of addressing critical issues like drought relief, MGNREGA wage payments, and disruptions in social welfare schemes in Karnataka, while also raising questions about political leadership and dynastic politics within the BJP.
