The Murder of Baba Tarsem Singh
The tragic incident involving the murder of Nanakmatta Gurdwara’s ‘karseva’ chief, Baba Tarsem Singh, occurred on March 28 when he was shot dead by two bike-borne assailants at the Nanakmatta Gurdwara in Udham Singh Nagar. The perpetrators were identified as Sarabjit Singh and Amarjit Singh, who arrived on a motorcycle. Baba Tarsem Singh was seated when he was fatally shot with a rifle by the pillion rider, Amarjit Singh.

Following the murder, an FIR was filed at the Nanakmatta police station against Harbansh Singh Chugh, a former IAS officer, and two others – Pritam Singh and Baba Anoop Singh. Jasbir Singh, a sevadar of the karseva, alleged that Chugh and the other accused conspired to orchestrate the killing of Tarsem Singh. He also implicated additional individuals in the alleged murder plot.

The State Police initiated a thorough investigation into the murder, conducting raids in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab to track down the remaining accused. Additionally, three more suspects were apprehended in connection with the case. These individuals were allegedly involved in facilitating the crime by recruiting criminals, providing resources, and supplying weapons.

Responding to the challenges posed by the Baba’s murder, DGP Abhinav Kumar stated that the Uttarakhand Police had treated it as a significant challenge. Both the STF and local police had been actively pursuing the culprits involved in the heinous act.

Furthermore, the DGP emphasized the police’s commitment to taking stringent action against criminals who commit such reprehensible acts within Uttarakhand’s jurisdiction.
