Rajasthan Assembly Election Witnesses 24.74% Voter Turnout by Midday

As the political landscape in Rajasthan unfolds, the ongoing assembly elections have registered a noteworthy 24.74% voter turnout for 199 constituencies by 11:30 am. This substantial participation underscores the significance of this electoral battle between the ruling Congress and the BJP. The polling process commenced at 7 am, following days of intense campaigning by both major political entities.

The democratic exercise, however, took an unfortunate turn as the Karanpur assembly constituency’s polling was deferred due to the untimely demise of Congress candidate Gurmeet Singh Koonar. Despite this somber development, voters, lining up with determination outside polling booths, have the opportunity to cast their votes until 6 pm.

Security remains a paramount concern, prompting the deployment of a comprehensive force of 1,02,290 personnel to ensure the elections proceed peacefully and fairly. This force includes 69,114 police personnel, 32,876 Rajasthan Home Guard, Forest Guard, RAC personnel, and 700 companies of CAPF.

The political arena in Rajasthan showcases eminent figures, with Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, former CM Vasundhara Raje, and former Deputy CM Sachin Pilot playing pivotal roles. Despite concerted efforts to persuade rebel candidates to withdraw their nominations, approximately 45 candidates from both the BJP and Congress are still in contention. The outcome of the electoral contest is slated to be revealed on December 3 during the vote counting process.

Reflecting on the 2018 elections, the Congress emerged triumphant with 99 seats, leaving the BJP trailing with 73. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot took the oath of office with the support of BSP MLAs and Independents. However, the ongoing elections have not been without incidents, as evidenced by a scuffle at a polling booth in Churu that required prompt police intervention, highlighting the palpable tensions surrounding this electoral event.
