Delhi Minister Raaj Kumar Anand resigned from his position in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), citing his perception of the party’s shift towards corruption, particularly highlighting the Delhi liquor policy case and the arrests of key leaders such as AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and former deputy Manish Sisodia. Following Anand’s resignation, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that Anand was pressured by the BJP to step down, though Anand did not confirm any external pressure.
Anand emphasized his initial attraction to the AAP due to its stance against corruption, expressing disappointment in the party’s perceived involvement in corrupt practices. He highlighted the absence of Dalit representation in the party’s leadership, stating his adherence to the principles of Baba Saheb Ambedkar and his inability to work for Dalits within the AAP as a reason for his departure.
In November 2023, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) searched Mr. Anand’s residence in connection with a money laundering case linked to customs. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence had accused him of making false declarations in imports, amounting to customs evasions exceeding ₹7 crore, prompting the ED to file a complaint against him.
With the Chief Minister incarcerated, it remains uncertain how the vacant portfolio will be assigned. Delhi Minister Atishi, a prominent AAP figure, has taken up Mr. Kejriwal’s cause during his detention. Recently, she accused the BJP of employing pressure tactics to coerce AAP members into joining the BJP, a statement that resulted in a defamation notice against her.
