Abhijit Gangopadhyay, Ex-Calcutta High Court Judge, Aligns with BJP Prior to Lok Sabha Elections

Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former member of the Calcutta High Court, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday. Expressing his satisfaction with the reception he received upon joining the BJP, Gangopadhyay emphasized the importance of combating corruption, stating, “Today’s joining is nice. The way they have welcomed me is overwhelming. Everybody knows corruption is to be fought.” Addressing the incident in Sandeshkhali, Gangopadhyay criticized the state’s handling of the situation and praised the efforts of BJP leaders who stood in solidarity with the affected women. He highlighted the BJP’s commitment to advocating for the rights of marginalized communities in Sandeshkhali. Gangopadhyay’s formal induction into the party took place in Kolkata in the presence of key figures such as state party chief Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. Majumdar extended a warm welcome to Gangopadhyay, expressing confidence in his ability to continue his advocacy for the underprivileged under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Looking ahead, Majumdar emphasized the potential for significant shifts in Bengal’s political landscape, encouraging educated youth to actively engage in shaping the state’s future. Having recently resigned from his position as a judge at the Calcutta High Court, Gangopadhyay had announced his intention to join the BJP. Speculation has arisen regarding his potential candidacy in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections from Bengal’s Tamluk constituency, traditionally held by the ruling Trinamool Congress. However, Gangopadhyay has deferred any decision regarding his electoral participation to the BJP.
