As world leaders gather in the United Arab Emirates for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28) from November 30 to December 12, 2023, the spotlight is on Adani Power Ltd., India’s largest private sector power generator, for its pioneering efforts in green energy transition and emission reduction.
As part of its comprehensive decarbonization strategy, Adani Power has launched a groundbreaking green ammonia combustion pilot project at its Mundra plant, India’s largest private sector power plant. The initiative aims to co-fire up to 20% green ammonia in the boiler of a conventional coal-fired 330MW unit.
Green ammonia, derived from green hydrogen produced through electrolysis using renewable energy, serves as a feedstock for the boilers. Notably, as ammonia contains no carbon, its combustion results in zero CO2 emissions, positioning it as a sustainable and carbon-neutral alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
Adani Power, known for setting industry benchmarks in per-unit emissions, has already incorporated state-of-the-art ‘Ultra Supercritical technology’ in its newest plants, further solidifying its commitment to environmental sustainability.
Collaborating with IHI and Kowa-Japan, Adani Power aims to conduct the pilot project and explore possibilities for expanding this eco-friendly solution to other units and stations. Kowa specializes in energy-saving and energy-creating products, while IHI, a heavy industry company, brings expertise in ammonia firing technology.
Initial combustion tests at IHI’s facility in Japan have commenced using a 20% ammonia blend, simulating Mundra Power Station equipment. The partners are optimistic that the results will pave the way for implementing this innovative solution at the Mundra Power Station, once economic parity is achieved between both feedstocks.
This ambitious project aligns with the Japan-India Clean Energy Partnership (CEP), a collaborative effort aimed at ensuring energy security, achieving carbon neutrality, and fostering economic growth. It falls under the purview of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization’s (NEDO) “International Demonstration Project for Japanese Technologies Contributing to Decarbonization and Energy Transition.”
Mr. Anil Sardana, Managing Director of Adani Power Ltd., emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to reducing its carbon footprint through the integration of cutting-edge technologies and proactive measures across its business value chain. He expressed enthusiasm about partnering with IHI and Kowa for blending green ammonia at the Mundra plant, foreseeing a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.
As the Mundra plant becomes the first location outside of Japan to embark on this environmentally transformative initiative, Adani Power sets a precedent for the global energy sector’s transition towards sustainable practices. The project underscores the pivotal role of international collaborations and technological innovations in achieving climate goals and fostering a greener future.
