Adani Total Gas Ltd. Launches ‘Green Hydrogen Blending Pilot Project’ at COP 28

As global leaders convene in the United Arab Emirates for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28) from November 30 to December 12, 2023, Adani Total Gas Ltd. (ATGL) announces a groundbreaking initiative—the ‘Green Hydrogen Blending Pilot Project.’ ATGL, a prominent energy and city gas distribution company co-promoted by Adani Group and TotalEnergies, aims to integrate Green Hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas for more than 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Green Hydrogen is produced through water electrolysis using electricity generated from renewable sources. The blending of hydrogen with natural gas, a key component of the pilot project, is recognized for being less carbon-intensive than conventional gas combustion while maintaining equivalent heating capabilities.

The anticipated commissioning of the project is set for the first quarter of FY24-25, with the percentage of green hydrogen gradually increasing to up to 8% or more, contingent on regulatory approvals. Following the successful completion of the pilot phase, hydrogen-blended fuel will be progressively supplied to larger sections of the city and other licensed areas of AGTL. Studies suggest that an 8% hydrogen blend can potentially reduce emissions by up to 4%.

Through this pilot initiative, ATGL aims to collaborate with various stakeholders, including regulatory authorities, to share insights and contribute to the development of an ecosystem for hydrogen blending in city gas distribution in India. This approach will facilitate knowledge sharing on operational aspects and the compatibility of blended fuel with existing infrastructure.

Suresh P Manglani, Executive Director & CEO of Adani Total Gas Ltd., expressed the company’s commitment to environmentally sustainable practices, stating, “We are fully committed to building an environmentally sustainable operation, and this project represents our ongoing dedication towards national infrastructure building for India to become energy independent by 2047. By investing in such innovative projects, we are actively contributing to the evolution of the industry and driving progress in sustainable energy solutions.”

The ‘Green Hydrogen Blending Pilot Project’ aligns with broader global efforts to explore cleaner energy alternatives and reduce carbon footprints, marking a significant step toward India’s energy transition goals.
