Following the gathering of the selection committee tasked with choosing the Election Commissioner, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, remarked, “The government holds the majority in this committee. Two individuals, Mr. Gyanesh Kumar from Kerala and Mr. Sukhbir Sandhu from Punjab have been appointed as Election Commissioners.”
The selection committee meeting to designate the Election Commissioner, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury remarked, “The government holds the majority within the committee responsible for appointing the election commissioner. Initially, they presented me with 212 names, but moments before the appointment, they narrowed it down to just six. I am aware that the Chief Justice of India (CJI) is absent, as the government has enacted legislation preventing the CJI’s intervention, thereby allowing the Central government to favorably select a candidate. While I do not claim arbitrariness, the current procedural approach appears to have deficiencies.”
