“Arbitrary and unprecedented”: Raghav Chadha slams BJP after court setback on bungalow

Aam Adami Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha expressed his strong dissatisfaction on Friday regarding the cancellation of his allotted bungalow, deeming it an arbitrary and unprecedented decision. Chadha also accused the BJP of influencing this decision for their own political agenda and personal interests.

In a significant setback for AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha, a Delhi court has ruled against his right to continue residing in the government bungalow that was allocated to him after the initial allotment was revoked. The court has lifted the interim stay previously granted to Chadha.

Chadha commented, “In the more than 70-year history of the Rajya Sabha, it is unprecedented to witness the removal of a sitting Rajya Sabha member from his duly allotted residence, where he has lived for a considerable period, with over 4 years of his tenure remaining.”

Furthermore, Chadha pointed out multiple irregularities in the decision and subsequent actions taken by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, which he claimed violated established rules and regulations. He asserted that these actions were seemingly orchestrated by the BJP to suppress political opposition, particularly from vocal parliamentarians like himself.

Chadha emphasized that his accommodation had been allocated by the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, taking into account his unique circumstances. The abrupt cancellation without any apparent justification, according to him, suggests that the entire process was undertaken to unfairly target and victimize him.

He also highlighted his suspension as a Member of Parliament initiated by the ruling party, the BJP, suggesting a pattern of silencing vocal parliamentarians and interfering with their duties as representatives of the House, which he characterized as vindictive politics.

Chadha substantiated his claims by citing instances of other MPs, including those from the BJP and other parties, who were residing in accommodations exceeding their entitlements, further underscoring the selective targeting of outspoken opposition members.

In conclusion, Chadha vowed to continue fearlessly advocating for the people of Punjab and India, regardless of the challenges he may face. He was initially granted a Type 6 bungalow in July of the previous year, subsequently requesting a larger Type 7 accommodation, which was allocated to him in September. However, in March, the secretariat cancelled the allotment, arguing that he was not entitled to a bungalow of that grade.

In response, Chadha had moved the Patiala House court in Delhi, which initially granted an interim stay on April 18. On Friday, the court lifted this stay, affirming that Chadha could not assert an absolute right to occupy the bungalow.
