Assam government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has embarked on a transformative journey aimed at bolstering education, empowering women entrepreneurs, and enhancing infrastructure across the state.
At a recent cabinet meeting held in Guwahati, Chief Minister Sarma announced the introduction of six tribal languages—Rabba, Karbi, Tiwa, Deori, and Dimasa—as mediums of instruction (MoI) in the foundational stage of school education. This move, aligned with the provisions of the National Education Policy 2020, aims to preserve the cultural heritage of tribal communities while facilitating their educational advancement.
Furthermore, the cabinet approved the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill 2024, recognizing Manipuri as an Associate Official Language in four districts of the state—Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Hojai. This decision reflects the government’s commitment to linguistic inclusivity and cultural diversity.
In a significant development for the veterinary and fisheries sector, the cabinet sanctioned the establishment of the Assam Veterinary and Fishery University. This new university, formed through the bifurcation of existing institutions, will play a pivotal role in advancing research, education, and innovation in animal husbandry and aquaculture.
Highlighting the government’s focus on women’s economic empowerment, Chief Minister Sarma unveiled the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan—Nogoria. This initiative aims to promote women self-help group (SHG) members as urban entrepreneurs, providing them with financial assistance and support to establish and sustain their ventures.
Moreover, to catalyze rural development, the government allocated Rs 1000 crore to the Mega Mission Society—Chief Minister Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana (MMS-CMSGUY). These funds will be utilized for implementing flagship schemes such as the Mukhyamantri Atmanirbhar Asom Abhiyan and Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Asoni, fostering entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities in rural areas.
Additionally, the cabinet sanctioned funds for critical infrastructure projects under the Assam Infrastructure Financing Authority (AIFA), demonstrating the government’s commitment to modernizing the state’s urban and rural infrastructure.
Chief Minister Sarma also announced measures to safeguard the land rights of indigenous communities and streamline administrative processes in line with electoral delimitation requirements.
These comprehensive reforms underscore the Assam government’s proactive approach towards inclusive growth, sustainable development, and cultural preservation, laying the foundation for a prosperous and resilient future for the state and its people.
