MET: Cyclonic circulation very likely over Southeast Bay of Bengal around May 6

A cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around May 6, Mrityunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.

A low pressure has formed over the same region as a result of its influence around May 7. He expects it to settle into a depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal by May 8.

The Indian Meteorological Department has put out a warning for the Southeast and nearby areas, advising fishermen not to approach the Southeast and Bay of Bengal from May 7 onwards, and to return to the surface by May 7.

Following that, it is expected to grow stronger into a cyclonic storm as it moves nearly northward towards the central Bay of Bengal. After the creation of a low-pressure area, specifics of its path and intensification will be provided. According to IMD, the system is constantly being tracked and under continuous surveillance.

Most regions will have light/moderate rain, with isolated heavy rain highly probable across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 7 and heavy to very severe rain from May 8-10.

Wind speeds may go up to 50-60 kmph in Bay of Bengal

On May 7, squally weather with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is expected to prevail across the southeast Bay of Bengal and neighboring portions of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and the Andaman Sea.

Wind speeds would gradually increase to 50-60 kmph with gusts up to 70 kmph across the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions of the Andaman Sea and Andaman & Nicobar Islands on May 8-9, and over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and the north Andaman Sea on May 10.

From the 10th to the 15th, wind speeds would progressively increase to 60-70 kmph with gusts up to 80 kmph over the southeast and neighboring central Bay of Bengal.

The Andaman Sea is expected to be rough to very rough from May 8-9, then very rough to high from May 10 onwards.
