Bengal: Sukanta Majumdar Urges Probe into Corruption Charges on TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee

West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar called for a thorough investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and expressed concern over the agency’s inability to trace the bank accounts of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee.

Majumdar stated, “Abhishek Banerjee has been called. His name is coming up again and again in corruption-related matters so ED will send summons. ED will call him whenever they want and he will have to go. ED should conduct a proper investigation. They are unable to locate his bank accounts.”

He further urged the ED to scrutinize whether Abhishek Banerjee held foreign bank accounts and if he was diverting funds through them. Majumdar pointed out, “He (Abhishek Banerjee) regularly visits foreign countries, Dubai, America, etc. ED should look at whether he might be having bank accounts in foreign. Further investigation should be pursued this way.”

In response to the ED summons, Abhishek Banerjee had earlier taken a swipe at the BJP-led central government, sharing the draft of the summons on his personal handle and suggesting that it exposed those who were “truly perturbED, rattlED, and scarED!” The summons coincided with a TMC agitation in Delhi against pending dues from the central government.

Abhishek Banerjee had previously been summoned by the ED in connection with an alleged teacher recruitment scam in September. On that occasion, he had to skip a meeting of the opposition INDIA Coordination Committee in Delhi due to the summons. After the questioning, he remarked, “I have done my duty, I have come to the ED office, joined the investigation, faced the questions, answered to the best of my abilities to the questions that were asked to me.”

These recent developments followed ED raids on the office of ‘Leaps and Bounds Pvt Ltd,’ which the agency alleged was involved in dubious transactions amounting to crores of rupees. The ED claimed that Abhishek Banerjee served as the company’s chief executive officer.
