Bulgaria’s ‘Friendship Group for India’ Boosts Bilateral Ties: Lok Sabha Speaker Birla

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed optimism about the newly formed “friendship group for India” in the National Assembly of Bulgaria, hoping that it would actively contribute to strengthening bilateral relations and parliamentary ties between the two nations. Birla made these remarks during a meeting with a parliamentary delegation led by the President of the National Assembly of Bulgaria, Rosen Zhelyazkov. Birla informed the delegation about the existence of a similar ‘friendship group’ in the Indian Parliament.

During the meeting, Birla highlighted the longstanding and robust friendly relations between India and Bulgaria, emphasizing shared values of democracy, rule of law, and transparent governance. He mentioned that the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries would be celebrated in December 2024 and expressed satisfaction with the strengthening of relations over the years.

Birla commended India’s growing global stature under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting the country’s significant socio-economic transformation. He mentioned India’s role in setting the global agenda during its leadership of the G20 and emphasized the country’s democratic heritage.

The Lok Sabha Speaker underscored the potential for increased bilateral trade and investment, calling for enhanced cooperation in areas such as science and technology, education, trade, and cultural exchange. Birla suggested opportunities for collaboration in renewable energy, green hydrogen, electric vehicles, and agriculture. He also recommended Bulgaria’s consideration of joining international initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.

President Zhelyazkov appreciated India’s leadership in global affairs, particularly in the G20, and expressed hope for the continued growth and prosperity of relations between India and Bulgaria.
