The Calcutta High Court has granted permission to Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, to conduct a public meeting on March 10 at Akratala area, located under Nazat police station in North 24 Parganas district. The court emphasized that the rally must not contain any remarks that could potentially disrupt law and order in the vicinity, particularly near Sandeshkhali.
The residence of Shajahan Sheikh, a suspended Trinamool Congress leader currently in CBI custody for his alleged involvement in an attack on ED officials, is situated in a village within the jurisdiction of Nazat police station. Sheikh is also accused in multiple cases related to offenses against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.
Upon a request by Adhikari, Justice Jay Sengupta granted permission for the public meeting to be held between 10 am and 5 pm on March 10.
Initially, Adhikari’s legal representatives sought approval to conduct the meeting at Sundarikhali village, but due to opposition from the state, they proposed an alternative location. Consequently, the court approved Akratala as the venue for the meeting, suggested by Adhikari’s lawyers. Meanwhile, the ruling Trinamool Congress is planning a large-scale rally at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata.
