Captain Fatima Wasim Makes History as First Woman Medical Officer Deployed to Siachen Glacier

In a groundbreaking achievement, Captain Fatima Wasim of the Siachen Warriors has etched her name in history as the first woman medical officer to be deployed to an operational post on the treacherous Siachen Glacier, announced the Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps in a statement on X.

Captain Fatima Wasim’s remarkable feat comes after she successfully completed rigorous training at the Siachen Battle School, showcasing her indomitable spirit and unwavering motivation. She was inducted into a post at an altitude of 15,200 feet, highlighting the challenges and extreme conditions she will face in her operational role.

To commemorate this historic moment, the Fire and Fury Corps shared a video in the post, providing a glimpse into Captain Fatima Wasim’s journey and celebrating her trailblazing achievement.

This accomplishment follows another milestone earlier this month when Captain Geetika Koul from the Snow Leopard Brigade became the first woman medical officer in the Indian Army to be deployed at Siachen. Both officers’ successful induction training at the Siachen Battle School underscores their resilience and commitment to serving in one of the world’s most demanding and highest-altitude battle sites.

The Siachen Glacier, located near the Indo-Pak Line of Control, is renowned as the highest-altitude battlefield globally. As the largest glacier in India and the second-largest in the world, Siachen serves as the highest battleground on earth. The deployment of women medical officers to this challenging terrain reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to gender inclusivity and recognizes the capabilities of women in serving vital roles in operational zones.
