An official statement released on Sunday confirmed the arrest of four individuals by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as part of an ongoing probe into cases of violence in Manipur. The arrested individuals have been identified as Paominlun Haokip, S Malsawm Haokip, Lhingneichong Baitekuki, and Tinneilhing Henthang.
According to an official source, two men and two women have been apprehended, all of whom are alleged to have played a role in the deaths of two students. The CBI disclosed that it had initiated two cases on August 23, 2023, following the Manipur Government’s request, taking over investigations previously conducted by the State Police. These cases were originally filed by the parents of minor victims on July 8 at the Imphal Police Station and July 19 at the Lamphel Police Station.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the CBI has arrested four individuals. The agency has stated that the arrested individuals will be presented before the Competent Court in Guwahati, as designated by the orders of the Supreme Court. Additionally, two minor children who were accompanying the arrested individuals during their transfer from Imphal (Manipur) to Guwahati (Assam) have been entrusted to the District Child Protection Officer of Kamrup Metro District to ensure their welfare, protection, and care.
The publication of photographs of the two students has led to increased tension in several districts of the state, with reports of confrontations between security forces and student demonstrators.
