A Halloween celebration in Chicago turned tragic as a gunman opened fire, injuring at least 15 people, two of whom are in critical condition, CNN reported on Monday. According to a news release from the Chicago police, the victims, ranging in age from 26 to 53, included six women and nine men. Responding swiftly to the scene at around 1 a.m. local time, officers apprehended the alleged shooter, who had fled but was found nearby with a handgun in his possession. The investigation remains ongoing, with no further details available as of Sunday morning.
Adding to the sense of alarm, an additional shooting incident in Laurel, Delaware, claimed one life and left two others injured just a day before. This incident followed the recent tragedy in Maine on October 26, where 18 people were killed and 13 others were wounded. The suspect in the Maine rampage, Robert Card, was found deceased 48 hours later, marking the deadliest mass shooting in the US this year since the Uvalde school massacre. Notably, the Gun Violence Archive has recorded a staggering 566 mass shootings in the country so far this year.
