CM Dhami assesses Uttarkashi tunnel collapse as PM ensures comprehensive support

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted an inspection on Monday at the Yamunotri National Highway site, where a section of an under-construction tunnel near Silkyara collapsed the previous day, trapping 40 workers. During the assessment, Dhami provided updates on the ongoing rescue efforts and highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inquired about the incident, assuring comprehensive assistance.

“We are closely monitoring the situation following the incident. Prime Minister Modi has been briefed about the entire incident, and he has committed to providing all necessary assistance. Expert teams, along with NDRF and SDRF units, have been deployed to facilitate the safe evacuation of the trapped individuals,” stated Dhami.

Emphasizing the commitment of both the Central and State Governments to the matter, Dhami reiterated their serious approach and continuous efforts. He noted that the rescue operations, which persisted throughout the night, faced challenges due to falling debris. Dhami expressed optimism that the stranded workers would be evacuated soon, mentioning the transportation of necessary Hume pipes from Haridwar to aid the rescue process.

“The teams are working tirelessly despite difficulties in removing debris. Our goal is to evacuate all 40 workers. Communication has been established, and the priority is to ensure the safety of everyone involved,” explained Dhami.

Rescuers reported that approximately 35 meters of debris still needed clearing to reach the location of the trapped workers. Fortunately, communication had been established with the workers, confirming their well-being. Authorities were sending food to the trapped individuals through a pipeline.

Anshu Manish Khalko, Director of NHIDCL (National Highway and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited), provided reassurance about the safety of the workers, stating, “The situation is better now. The workers are safe. We are providing food and water. There are nearly 40 people inside. We are trying our best.”

Abhishek Rohhila, the District Magistrate of Uttarkashi, informed ANI, “We received information about an accident here. The teams of administration, police, health, and response forces like SDRF and NDRF reached here and started the rescue operation. We are trying to rescue people who are stranded inside as soon as possible.” The tunnel collapse occurred about 200 meters ahead of the starting point on the Silkyara side of the tunnel connecting Silkyara and Dandalgaon in Uttarkashi district on November 12.
