Congress accuses BRS MLC K Kavitha of Breaching Model Code of Conduct

Telangana Congress Leader G Niranjan has filed a formal complaint against BRS MLC K Kavitha, accusing her of violating the model code of conduct by allegedly soliciting votes on polling day. Niranjan alleges that Kavitha breached the Election Code by urging people to vote for BRS after casting her own vote at the DAV School polling station in Banjara Hills. In response, Niranjan stated, “This is brought to the notice of the State Chief Electoral Officer, Vikas Raj, for taking action.” This development comes amid a high-stakes assembly election in Telangana, where leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others, have urged citizens to vote in record numbers.

K Kavitha, a prominent figure in BRS, cast her vote for the Telangana assembly polls earlier in the day. While exiting the polling station, she appealed to urban voters, emphasizing the day’s significance in participating and strengthening democracy. The election, featuring 3.17 crore voters and 2290 candidates, is unfolding at 35,655 polling stations across the state. Notably, for the first time in Telangana, home voting options have been extended to citizens aged over 80 and those with disabilities, with 27,600 voters taking advantage of this service. Additionally, 1,000 voters have registered for the Electronically Transmitted Postal Ballot System.

The context of this electoral tension stems from the historical performance of political parties in Telangana. In the inaugural 2014 assembly polls, the Congress secured 25.20% of the votes, while BRS (then TRS) attained 34%. In 2018, BRS (then Telangana Rashtra Samithi) dominated with 88 out of 119 seats and a 47.4% vote share, leaving the Congress trailing with just 19 seats. The unfolding developments underscore the heightened stakes in this electoral battleground.
