Crime thriller ‘Sugar Bandits’ set to feature Will Smith in lead role

Will Smith, renowned actor and rapper, is gearing up to headline the adrenaline-pumping action thriller ‘Sugar Bandits’.

The upcoming film, based on Chuck Hogan’s novel ‘Devils in Exile’, is poised to make waves at the forthcoming European Film Market (EFM).

Smith is set to star in ‘Sugar Bandits’, a gripping action-thriller that centers on an Iraq War veteran joining forces with fellow veterans to combat the drug trade in Boston, as reported by Variety.

The screenplay for ‘Sugar Bandits’ was adapted by Chuck Hogan, known for his work on ‘The Town’ and ‘The Strain’ alongside Guillermo del Toro. AGC International and CAA Media Finance will handle worldwide distribution rights and present the film to potential buyers at the upcoming EFM.

Producing alongside Smith and Jon Mone of Westbrook Studios are Stuart Ford for AGC Studios and Richard Abate for 3 Arts Entertainment. Ryan Shimazaki oversees the project.

Details regarding the film’s plot are being kept under wraps. The movie, which is based on Chuck Hogan’s novel ‘Devils in Exile’, is fully financed by AGC Studios and is currently seeking a director. It will be showcased at the EFM in Berlin this month.

Notably, ‘Sugar Bandits’ was originally set up at Universal Pictures over a decade ago, with Joe Carnahan in talks to direct.

This project marks Smith’s latest venture in feature films following ‘Emancipation’, directed by Antoine Fuqua. The latter film, released by Apple TV+, garnered attention not only for its content but also for Smith’s headline-making incident at the Oscars. Smith’s future projects include the highly anticipated ‘I Am Legend’ sequel, featuring Michael B. Jordan, and the fourth installment of the ‘Bad Boys’ franchise.

Smith’s involvement in ‘Sugar Bandits’ dates back to its initial announcement in 2013 when Universal began development. He is represented by CAA, while Chuck Hogan is represented by WME and 3 Arts Entertainment.

The European Film Market coincides with the Berlin Film Festival, which kicks off on February 15th with the world premiere of ‘Small Things Like These’ starring Cillian Murphy, as per Variety’s report.
