During the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Open-debate on the “situation in the Middle East, Ambassador R. Ravindra, India’s Deputy Permanent Representative (DPR) to the United Nations, expressed India’s profound apprehension regarding the escalating security crisis and the extensive loss of civilian lives within the ongoing conflict. He further emphasized the equally distressing humanitarian crisis accompanying the dire situation.
Regarding the October 7th terror attacks in Israel, India staunchly denounced the violence and expressed heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Notably, India’s Prime Minister was among the first global leaders to convey support and prayers for the victims and their families during this distressing time.
Reaffirming their solidarity with Israel, the Indian representative underscored the gravity of civilian casualties, emphasizing the critical need for all parties to ensure the protection of civilians, particularly women and children.
India further stressed the imperative for both sides to actively foster an environment conducive to peace, urging the resumption of direct negotiations. The statement highlighted the pressing necessity for de-escalation and the cessation of violence, emphasizing the crucial role of credible, direct talks between Israel and Palestine in establishing lasting peace in the region.
According to R. Ravindra, India has actively contributed to providing humanitarian aid to the civilians in the Gaza Strip during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Notably, India has dispatched 38 tons of essential medical supplies and food items to assist the affected population.
“India has sent 38 tons of humanitarian goods, including medicines and equipment, to the people of Palestine. India has always negotiated a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine issue, leading to the establishment of a sovereign, independent and viable state of Palestine, living within secure and recognized borders, side by side in peace with Israel, taking into account the legitimate security concerns of Israel… We also continue to support the Palestinian people through our bilateral development partnership, which covers a wide range of sectors including health, education, women’s empowerment, entrepreneurship and information technology…In these challenging times, India will continue to send humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine…Every effort must be made to create conducive conditions for the resumption of these talks…,” said R. Ravindra.
Wrapping up his remarks, R. Ravindra emphasized India’s unwavering dedication to finding a fair, peaceful, and enduring resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. The ministerial meeting of the United Nations Security Council, convened under the Brazilian Presidency, witnessed addresses from prominent figures including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Eli Cohen, Palestine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Riyad Al-Maliki, and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken
