Freezing temperatures gripped Delhi on Tuesday, causing disruptions in both air and rail travel. Approximately 30 flights departing from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport were delayed, and 17 were canceled due to adverse weather conditions, which included a minimum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius. Passengers were left waiting at the airport due to low visibility. After that passengers were provided with an advisory from Delhi airport. The advisory urged passengers to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information.
In addition to flight disruptions, 30 trains were delayed due to low visibility. The Indian Meteorological Department reported that Palam and Safdarjung airports in Delhi had a visibility of 500 meters. The fog is categorized as ‘dense’ when visibility drops to 50 meters.
The challenging weather conditions extended to various parts of the region, with visuals from Nirankari colony showing a thick blanket of fog covering the area. The freezing temperatures prompted people to seek refuge in government-run ‘Rain Baseras’ (shelter homes), which provide blankets, beds, hot water, and food to the homeless during the cold season.
This weather disruption comes after visibility was recorded as ‘zero’ for the first time this winter season in several areas, including Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan, Patiala, Ambala, Chandigarh, Palam, Safdarjung (New Delhi), Bareilly, Lucknow, Bahraich, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Tezpur, according to the weather department.
