Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi clarified on Monday that the bill to replace the ordinance on control of services in Delhi is not listed for today’s business in Parliament. He informed reporters that the matter will not be taken up on this day.
“We will inform you when it (Delhi Ordinance Bill) will be introduced. It is not mentioned in the List of Businesses today,” Joshi stated before the Parliament convened.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal also confirmed that the Bill will not be introduced in Parliament on this day. He pointed out the opposition’s changing demands and accused them of trying to politicize the issue.
“We have been asking for their (Opposition) demand since the first day; they wanted a discussion on Manipur, and when we agreed to it, now they changed their demand and want the Prime Minister to speak on this issue. They are trying to politicize this issue. They have brought the no-confidence motion; we will have discussions on the same whenever the Speaker decides,” Meghwal said.
Earlier, the Aam Aadmi Party issued a three-line whip to all its Rajya Sabha MPs, asking them to be present in the House from July 31 to August 4 in support of the party’s stand on the bill to replace the ordinance on control of services in Delhi during the monsoon session of Parliament.
The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, which aims to replace the Centre’s Ordinance on control of services in Delhi, is on the government’s agenda for this week in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The bill seeks to include ‘services’ under the legislative competence of the Delhi legislative assembly, overturning the earlier ordinance that excluded it. The ordinance was brought after a Supreme Court judgment on the control of services in Delhi.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has sought the support of the opposition against the Ordinance, and members of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance are expected to oppose the Bill in Parliament. Nevertheless, the government remains confident of passing the bill.
