Donald Trump has taken to Truth Social to declare that no props or artificial lifts will be permitted in his upcoming debate with Kamala Harris. He described the use of such items as “cheating,” drawing on a previous instance where former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg was barred from using a lift during a debate. Trump emphasized that this rule is crucial to ensure fairness, claiming that “You are who you are” should be the standard.
Height Discrepancies in Focus
In his official health records from his presidency, Trump’s height is listed as 6’3” by Dr. Ronny Jackson. Kamala Harris, believed to be 5’4”, could appear taller if she wears heels. The debate’s format and Trump’s insistence on these rules highlight ongoing discussions about the candidates’ physical presentation.
Debate Format and Rules
The debate, hosted by ABC News, will feature a structured format with candidates given two minutes to answer questions, two minutes for rebuttals, and one minute for follow-ups or clarifications. No audience will be present, and each candidate will have two minutes for closing statements. Candidates will be provided with a pen, pad of paper, and a water bottle, but pre-written notes and props will be prohibited. Additionally, campaign staff will not be allowed to interact with the candidates during commercial breaks.
Previous Controversies
Trump’s focus on height and props is not new. In 2020, he mocked Bloomberg on social media for allegedly using a standing box during debates, calling him “Mini Mike” and criticizing him for trying to “buy” the nomination.
