EAM S Jaishankar, Iran President Raisi Discuss Pacing up Iran-India Agreements

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi held discussions on expediting the implementation of various agreements between India and Iran, with a focus on the Chabahar Port Development Plan. During their meeting, Jaishankar expressed India’s keen interest in finalizing a comprehensive and long-term cooperation agreement with Iran.

The Iranian President stressed the urgency of advancing agreements, including the Chabahar Port Development Plan, and addressing delays in commitments. Both leaders underscored the deep-rooted relations between their countries and explored avenues for enhanced cooperation in political, economic, scientific, technological, transportation, and energy sectors.

Key areas of discussion included shared efforts to combat terrorism and organized crime, cooperation for stability in Afghanistan, strengthening international trade using national currencies, and ensuring the security of shipping in international waters. President Raisi also raised concerns about the situation in Gaza, urging India to contribute to ending hostilities, lifting the blockade, and securing the rights of the Palestinian people.

During the meeting, Jaishankar conveyed condolences for the recent terrorist incident in Kerman and expressed gratitude for Iran’s efforts in regional relations. The External Affairs Minister reiterated India’s commitment to its obligations in the Chabahar port development project and emphasized the comprehensive development of cooperation with Iran.

Earlier, Jaishankar met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, discussing bilateral and multilateral ties within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and BRICS. The leaders delved into international and regional developments, including the Israel-Hamas conflict, highlighting the importance of security in international waterways near Iran.

Jaishankar’s visit to Iran is part of ongoing high-level exchanges, and during his trip, he engaged with Iran’s Secretary of Supreme National Security Council, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, and Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Mehrdad Bazrpash, to strengthen cooperation, particularly regarding the Chabahar Port.
