Election Commission’s Visit to Assam: Emphasizing Ethical Campaigning Ahead of Lok Sabha Polls

In anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, a delegation from the Election Commission of India (ECI) arrived in Guwahati, Assam, on Tuesday. Their primary objective is to hold discussions with state officials and political parties to evaluate the security arrangements in Assam.

The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, informed the media that the state government has formally requested the ECI to schedule the elections in Assam before the Bohag Bihu or Rongali Bihu celebrations.

Amid growing concerns over the declining standards of political campaign discourse observed in recent elections, the ECI has issued a fresh advisory to all political parties. The advisory emphasizes the need for maintaining decorum and exercising utmost restraint in public campaigning, promoting issue-based debates over personal attacks.

In light of this, the ECI has put ‘Star Campaigners’ and candidates on notice, warning of stern action in case of violations of the Model Code of Conduct. Repeat offenses across all phases and geographical areas of the Lok Sabha polls and four state Legislative assemblies will be dealt with strictly.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar reiterated the importance of fostering ethical and respectful political discourse, urging political parties to inspire unity and promote ideas rather than division. The Commission has urged all parties, leaders, and candidates to adhere to the Model Code of Conduct and the legal framework, cautioning against any form of surrogate or indirect violations.

Star campaigners, designated under Section 77 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, are responsible for delivering speeches at significant political rallies. While enjoying the privileges granted by the Act, they are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards during election campaigns, ensuring a constructive and purposeful discourse.

The ECI’s visit to Assam and its proactive measures underscore its commitment to ensuring free, fair, and peaceful elections, upholding the democratic values of the nation.
