SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk has criticized the Canadian government, led by Justin Trudeau, for what he perceives as an infringement on free speech in the country. Musk’s comments were prompted by a recent government order that mandates online streaming services to officially register with the government to be subject to “regulatory controls.”
Musk’s response was to a post by journalist and author Glenn Greenwald, who was commenting on this government directive. Greenwald’s post on X (formerly Twitter) highlighted the Canadian government’s stringent online censorship measures and its requirement for “online streaming services that offer podcasts” to register formally for regulatory oversight.
In reaction to this development, Elon Musk stated, “Trudeau is attempting to suppress free speech in Canada. Shameful.”
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time the Trudeau government has faced accusations of undermining free speech. In February 2022, Trudeau invoked emergency powers for the first time in Canada’s history to grant his government increased authority to respond to protests by truckers opposing vaccine mandates at the time.
Additionally, the Canadian Prime Minister stirred controversy by alleging India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India firmly rejected these claims, describing them as “absurd” and “motivated.” Canada has yet to provide public evidence to support these allegations.
In response to the strained relations between the two countries, India suspended its visa services in Canada. An advisory was issued by India for its citizens and travelers to Canada, urging “utmost caution” due to the rise in anti-India activities, politically endorsed hate crimes, and criminal violence in the country.
