Former Maldives Defence Minister Highlights India as Crucial Ally, Criticizes Government for Short-Sighted Remarks Against PM Modi

Former Maldives Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi asserted on Monday that disparaging remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcase the “short-sightedness” of the Maldives government. She emphasized India’s role as a reliable ally, criticizing any attempt to undermine the enduring relationship. Didi expressed disappointment over the derogatory comments, describing India as the “911 call” for the Maldives, consistently coming to their aid in times of need.

Highlighting the present administration’s lack of foresight, Didi, representing Galolhu Dhekunu, underlined India’s crucial support in defense capacity building, equipment provision, and efforts towards Maldives’ self-sufficiency. She stressed the shared security concerns and the historical alignment of Maldives and India in their pursuit of democracy and respect for human rights.

The controversy emerged last week when a Maldivian deputy minister, along with cabinet members and government officials, made unsavory remarks about PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep. Didi criticized such statements, emphasizing India’s vital role as a dependable ally whenever the Maldives required assistance.

The former Maldives Defence Minister urged the government to recognize the sentiments of the Maldivian people, citing instances of seeking medical treatment in India and receiving COVID-19 vaccines under Indian aid. She emphasized the necessity of upholding international commitments, maintaining the “India first” policy, and continuing the enduring friendship between the two nations.

Regarding the social media firestorm surrounding derogatory remarks, the Maldivian government distanced itself from Minister Mariyam Shiuna’s comments, stating they do not reflect the government’s views. The government pledged ‘appropriate action’ against the minister and stressed the importance of exercising freedom of expression responsibly.

Didi clarified the presence of Indian troops in Maldives, highlighting their role in humanitarian efforts at the Maldivian government’s request. She emphasized that the technical support provided by India was purely humanitarian, assisting in the evacuation of Maldivian citizens, and clarified that Indian helicopters operated under the command and control of the Maldives National Defence Force.
