The former criminal turned politician Mukhtar Ansari passed away on Thursday following a heart attack that worsened his condition. Following notification of the district administration, a group of physicians was contacted, and the prisoner was referred to the medical college that same evening. Under police protection, the prisoner was brought to Medical College Banda for treatment. His health had declined for the second time in two days. Ansari complained of stomach ache on Tuesday as well, so the hospital admitted him for almost 14 hours.
Mukhtar Ansari has been imprisoned in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh since 2005. There are currently more than 60 criminal cases against the 60-year-old don who turned politician. Since September 2022, he has been found guilty in eight counts by various UP courts and was incarcerated in the Banda jail.
Mukhtar Ansari was a five-time former MLA from Mau Sadar seat and had been behind bars in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab since 2005. He had over 60 criminal cases pending against him. He had been sentenced in eight cases since September 2022 by different courts of UP and was lodged in the Banda jail.
Ansari’s name was on the list of 66 gangsters issued by Uttar Pradesh Police last year. His family members had earlier expressed apprehension that Mukhtar Ansari could be killed in a fake encounter.
