Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the expanded world-class integrated Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport, a project led by GMR Airports Infrastructure Ltd (GIL)-led DIAL. As part of this dedication, the GMR group has geared up to put the revamped Terminal 1 into operation.
The inauguration ceremony, held on Sunday, marked the unveiling of 15 airport projects, including the introduction of 12 new terminal buildings valued at nearly Rs 10,000 crore in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. This event stands as a significant infrastructural addition, encompassing new airports, expanded terminals, and foundation stone laying for upcoming airports and associated facilities.
PM Modi’s initiative includes the introduction of 12 new terminal buildings at various airports across the country and laying the foundation stone for three more at Kadapa, Hubballi, and Belagavi airports. The revamped Terminal 1 at Delhi Airport, with a capacity to accommodate 40 million passengers per annum (MPPA), has now doubled its previous capability, positioning Delhi Airport among the world’s leading aviation hubs with a capacity of 100 MPPA.
The expansion work at Delhi Airport, undertaken by GMR Airports Infrastructure Ltd (GIL)-led DIAL since 2019, aligns with the Master Plan 2016, prompted by the surge in Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) and passenger numbers, surpassing earlier projections.
This marks the culmination of the Phase 3A Expansion project, signifying a significant advancement in Indian aviation. Spearheaded by GMR Airports Infrastructure Ltd (GIL)-led DIAL, this initiative embodies the nation’s aspirations, fostering growth, innovation, and employment opportunities.
Speaking on this occasion, I Prabhakara Rao, Group Deputy Managing Director, GMR Group, emphasized the monumental nature of the Delhi Airport Phase 3A Expansion project, showcasing India’s ambition and its role in facilitating continued growth. Terminal 1’s expansion not only enhances capacity but also redefines the passenger experience, incorporating sustainable practices.
Rao highlighted the project’s focus on providing a seamless journey through features like facial recognition, self-service kiosks, and automated baggage systems. Additionally, the expanded terminal offers spacious concourses with natural lighting, providing comfort amenities such as prayer rooms, yoga areas, and quiet zones.
He emphasized that this project reflects India’s aspirations, positioning the National Capital as a Gateway to New India, thereby strengthening economic prospects, fostering innovation, and generating employment opportunities.
As the project concludes, Rao underscored that it’s just the beginning of an exciting journey ahead. He expressed the commitment to continue innovating, collaborating, and pushing boundaries to ensure that Indian aviation reaches new heights.
