Google Likely To Introduce “Satellite SOS” Feature for Pixel Phones Soon

Satellite SOS, a feature that enables users to contact emergency services when unable to connect to a cellular network or Wi-Fi, might soon be available on Google Pixel phones, similar to Apple’s satellite connectivity feature introduced with the iPhone 14 in 2022.

Recent updates to the “Adaptive Connectivity Services” app indicate the emergence of the “Satellite SOS” feature on Google Pixel devices. Users have reported spotting this option within the Safety & emergency settings, positioned between Emergency SOS and Car Crash Detection.

Although tapping on the Satellite SOS feature does not currently activate any functionality, the new version (p.2024.08) of the Adaptive Connectivity Services app appears to provide support for this feature. Once functional, Satellite SOS will allow Pixel users to send messages to emergency services via satellites, particularly useful during situations like natural disasters or wilderness adventures when traditional connectivity options are unavailable.

According to reports, when utilizing Satellite SOS, users’ personal information such as name, email, phone number, location, device details, and emergency contacts will be shared with emergency services and satellite service providers. Additionally, there are references to the Garmin Search and Rescue insurance plan within the feature screens, along with a list of supported countries.

Although initially exclusive to Pixel devices, Google is expected to extend the Satellite SOS feature to other flagship Android smartphones. This move follows Apple’s expansion of satellite connectivity beyond the US and Canada, offering users a reliable emergency communication option regardless of their location.
