Seven religious sites to be connected by Waterways in Guwahati

Assam will sign a Memorandum of Understanding for the “Riverine-based tourism Circuit” that is being developed over the river Brahmaputra. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Sagarmala Development Company Limited (SDCL), Assam Tourism Development Corporation Limited (ATDC), and Directorate of Inland Water Transport (DIWT) will be signing the MoU on May 19, 2023, in Guwahati.

Both Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal will be present at the signing ceremony. The ‘Riverine-based tourism Circuit’ will link seven historic temples in the area, according to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW), and the project is being developed at an initial cost of Rs 40–45 crores.

“The project is being developed under the Sagarmala Programme at an initial cost of Rs 40-45 crores. SDCL and IWAI will jointly contribute 55 percent of the project cost while the remaining will be provided by ATDC. DIWT has consented to provide the usage of Ghats near the temples free of cost for the project,” the ministry has said.

Waterway to connect seven historical temples in Guwahati

The seven historical temples in Guwahati—Kamakhya, Pandunath, Ashwaklanta, Doul Govinda, Umananda, Chakreshwar, and Auniati Satra—will be linked by the Sagarmala project.

The circuit will set out from Hanuman Ghat in Uzan Bazar and will travel all the way there by passing by the waterways of the aforementioned temples. According to the ministry, the ferry service will enable travelers to complete one full circuit in less than two hours overall.
