In a recent interview with Canadian journalist Tahir Gora , Indian High Commissioner in Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, emphasized that India is seeking “specific and relevant” evidence regarding the killing of India-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The Indian envoy stated that India is open to business relations and urged Ottawa to focus on convergence rather than differences. He called for a resolution of the case through a logical and legally defendable process, underlining India’s commitment to cooperation with Canada in reaching conclusions based on shared information.
Verma responded to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s concerns, stating that India is keen on addressing specific information shared by Canadian authorities to assist in reaching conclusions regarding the case. He emphasized that India’s request for evidence is aimed at supporting Canadian investigators and ensuring a legally viable course of action. While acknowledging the understanding of India’s concerns in Canadian policy circles, Verma urged for more tangible actions on the ground to strengthen bilateral ties.
Despite the current divergence on the Nijjar case, the Indian envoy stressed the importance of focusing on convergence and encouraged continued trade relations between the two nations. Verma highlighted the separate nature of trade issues, expressing hope that both countries could leverage economic opportunities for mutual benefit. He called for collaboration in areas like technology and agriculture, emphasizing the potential for a positive trajectory in Indo-Canadian relations.
Addressing concerns of threats faced by Indian diplomats in Canada, Verma condemned such actions as deplorable and illegal. He urged Canadian authorities to restart sending business delegations to India and reiterated India’s request to prevent the use of Canadian soil for anti-India activities.
