Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina held discussions on political and security cooperation during their meeting in New Delhi as part of the G20 Summit preparations. The leaders signed three agreements, including one related to digital payment integration, and focused on regional stability in South Asia, enhancing cooperation in areas like security, trade, and energy.
The two nations formalized three memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to strengthen their collaboration. These included an agreement on digital payment mechanisms between the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Bangladesh Bank. Another MoU pertained to cooperation between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council, while the third centered on renewing a bilateral cultural exchange program for 2023-25.
During a post-meeting media briefing, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen emphasized both countries’ commitment to regional peace and stability, highlighting their shared perspective. He underlined the importance of progress and development in Bangladesh, citing past challenges and expressing the desire to avoid a return to a time of terrorism and instability.
Furthermore, the Bangladeshi sources mentioned assured that its relations with China primarily revolved around economic matters, while its collaboration with India held a more strategic focus. The leaders also discussed a wide range of topics, including border management, trade, connectivity, water resources, power, development cooperation, and multilateral engagement.
They celebrated the operationalization of agreements related to the use of Chattogram and Mongla ports in Bangladesh for shipping goods to India’s northeastern states, the commissioning of the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline, and the initiation of bilateral trade settlements in Indian rupees.
