Greek PM: India to be invited to join trilateral summit of Israel, Greece, Cyprus

According to a report from The Times of Israel, there is a possibility that India may receive an invitation to participate in the next trilateral summit alongside Israel, Greece, and Cyprus, scheduled for the upcoming year. During the 9th Trilateral Summit involving Israel, Greece, and Cyprus, Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed a strong interest in establishing a partnership for natural gas exports, with India being considered as a potential participant in the forthcoming summit, as reported by The Times of Israel.

In a joint press conference held in Nicosia, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, along with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu, reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the 3+1 format with the United States. They also stressed the value of enhancing 3+1 cooperation, including tangible outcomes with other countries, with a specific mention of India, as conveyed in an official statement by the Cyprus government.

During the summit, the leaders reiterated their dedication to strengthening the dynamic cooperation of the trilateral partnership platform. They emphasized that this commitment reflects shared values and an ever-increasing array of common interests, all aimed at contributing to peace, stability, security, and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean region and the broader area.

The statement also underscored their continued commitment to welcoming other like-minded parties into their determined effort to generate and advance synergies that benefit their countries, people, and the entire region.

Recognizing the critical role of the energy sector, particularly in natural gas, electricity, and renewable energy, the leaders agreed that it serves as a solid foundation for regional cooperation. Their cooperation is founded on international law, including the law of the sea, and respect for all states’ rights within their respective Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) and Continental Shelves.

Given the heightened need for energy diversification and interconnectivity due to geopolitical developments, the leaders reaffirmed their mutual interest in advancing the prospects for a dependable energy corridor extending from the Eastern Mediterranean basin to Europe.

In this context, the leaders emphasized the importance of further promoting energy synergies with like-minded nations, including the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF), and regional projects such as electrical interconnections, like the EuroAsia Interconnector, as well as potential natural gas and hydrogen pipelines.

Acknowledging the global challenge of climate change, the leaders committed to reinforcing their efforts through regional cooperative projects, research and development initiatives, innovative energy technologies, and the promotion of greater regional energy connectivity. Against the backdrop of recent wildfires in Greece and Cyprus, and recognizing Israel’s recent assistance, they reaffirmed their mutual commitment to aiding each other in emergency responses and enhancing coordination and joint capabilities for such purposes.

The statement also underscored the value of the 3+1 format with the United States, highlighting its potential to yield tangible outcomes across various domains, including energy, the economy, climate action, emergency preparedness, and counterterrorism. The leaders concurred on working together to organize a ministerial 3+1 meeting later this year.
