In a significant stride towards cancer awareness and support, the Indian Cancer Society (ICS), the country’s largest anti-cancer NGO, unveiled its pioneering ‘Rise Against Cancer’ mobile app on World Cancer Day. Developed in collaboration with the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC) and Roche Products (India) Private Limited, the Made in India app seeks to address gaps, raise awareness, and create a united front against cancer.
According to GLOBOCAN, nearly 1.3 million individuals in India receive a cancer diagnosis each year, and approximately 800 thousand succumbed to the disease in 2020. Acknowledging this concerning statistic, ICS has set an ambitious goal to reach 50% of the total adult population within the next decade. The app aims to provide accurate information and counseling to facilitate early detection and cure.
Mrs. Usha Thorat, National Managing Trustee of the Indian Cancer Society, highlighted the global health challenge posed by cancer and emphasized the proactive initiative taken by the ICS Delhi branch. The ‘Rise Against Cancer’ app is accessible in five languages – Hindi, English, Kannada, Marathi, and Bengali, with plans for additional features and languages in future phases.
Mrs. Jyotsna Govil, Chairperson of the ICS Delhi Branch, explained that the app is designed to empower individuals affected by cancer, allowing them to take charge of their health. With sections including an information hub, resource library, events, community and support groups, along with news and updates, the app covers information on four types of cancer and is available in five languages.
Having served the community for over seven decades, ICS focuses on preventing cancer, providing financial assistance for treatment, managing post-treatment life, offering cancer registry services, and publishing the esteemed Indian Journal of Cancer. In alignment with the World Cancer Day 2024 theme, “Close the Care Gap,” ICS aims to bridge gaps through the ‘Rise Against Cancer’ app.
Dr. Anita Borges, National Vice Chairman of ICS, expressed joy at the launch, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to battling cancer and serving as a beacon of hope for underprivileged patients. The ‘Rise Against Cancer’ Mobile App is envisioned to foster a proactive approach to early detection and intervention.
Mr. D.S. Negi, CEO of RGCIRC, commended the ICS team for their commitment to cancer prevention and applauded the potential of the app in enhancing awareness and education. The partnership with ICS reflects RGCIRC’s dedication to innovative healthcare solutions and empowering individuals with knowledge in the fight against cancer.
