India is set to launch its first Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) from the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The initiative, operating under the project name ‘Sanjeevani,’ aims to revolutionize medical outreach and trauma care services by utilizing helicopters to reach remote areas.
Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, in collaboration with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami, confirmed the progress of the HEMS project. Scindia assured that the helicopter assembly and certification are underway, and once operational, the HEMS will cover a radius of 150 kilometers, stationed at AIIMS Rishikesh. This strategic placement will facilitate the timely transportation of accident victims and patients from challenging terrains to the medical facility.
Highlighting the significance of HEMS, Scindia emphasized its crucial role in the ‘golden hour’ following accidents, ensuring swift and expert medical care. The initiative is particularly essential for Uttarakhand, known for its diverse landscape, attracting tourists, pilgrims, and adventure enthusiasts, while also facing natural disasters.
In addition to the HEMS project, Scindia announced the commencement of a new air connectivity project from Hindon Air Base to Pithoragarh in response to the state government’s request. The bidding process for this route has been completed, and further investigations under UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) will determine the specific route.
These two projects are poised to be game-changers for Uttarakhand, offering a lifeline to those in need of emergency medical services and enhancing connectivity in the challenging terrain. The integrated airport building at Uttarakhand airport, as assured by Scindia, is expected to further facilitate these initiatives.
As these projects unfold, Uttarakhand anticipates a significant improvement in healthcare access and overall connectivity, marking a crucial step towards a safer and more resilient future for the state’s residents and visitors alike.
