The International Olympic Committee (IOC) declared that Cricket is set to make a comeback to the Olympics at the Los Angeles 2028 Games after an absence of 128 years. The ongoing 141st IOC session in Mumbai accepted the proposal put forth by the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 to incorporate other sports such as baseball/softball, lacrosse, squash, and flag football into the 2028 event.
Cricket, which was last featured in the 1900 Paris Olympics, saw Great Britain emerging victorious over France. However, it has remained a part of events like the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. While the decision to include Cricket received widespread support, it faced opposition from two IOC members, with one abstaining from the voting process. Expressing her enthusiasm for the inclusion of Cricket, Nita Ambani, Chairperson of the Reliance Foundation and an IOC board member, highlighted the global appeal and religious significance of the sport, especially in India. She emphasized that this move would foster greater participation in the Olympic Movement and amplify Cricket’s international recognition.
The IOC session in Mumbai, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, serves as a significant platform for making pivotal decisions concerning the future of the Olympic games. This marks India’s second time hosting the IOC session, the previous one being in New Delhi in 1983, nearly 40 years ago.
