External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has emphasized the uniqueness and significance of the G20 Summit held during India’s presidency. Speaking during a virtual address at the G20 University Connect event, EAM Jaishankar highlighted that India’s G20 presidency stood out due to its substantial achievements and its transformation into a nationwide movement.

EAM Jaishankar noted, “Our G20 presidency is special…it is different. We succeeded in taking the G20 out of the capital city and its convention centers and made it a mass movement. It was truly a people’s G20, and Jan Bhagidari (public participation) was the central feature of our presidency.”

Addressing students, faculty members, and Vice Chancellors from participating universities, the External Affairs Minister praised India’s role as the G20 chair this year. He highlighted the extensive scope of the G20 events, which took place in over 60 cities across all states and Union Territories of India, making it a national celebration.

More than 30,000 delegates from 125 countries witnessed India’s commitment to “Atithi Devo Bhavo” (Guest is God) and experienced a globally prepared India, Jaishankar emphasized.

EAM participated virtually in the event as he is currently in New York for the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The G20 Summit was held from September 9 to 10 at the Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in New Delhi and witnessed significant participation from world leaders.

He also acknowledged that several substantial outcomes emerged from the G20 Summit, demonstrating India’s convening power and the acceptance of its ideas on the global stage.

EAM Jaishankar also discussed the University Connect program and highlighted its importance in initiating India’s G20 Presidency. He explained that the goal of making India a developed nation by its centenary of independence is rooted in the collective aspiration to build a more prosperous nation for future generations.

The G20 University Connect Finale brought together approximately 3,000 students, faculty members, and Vice Chancellors from participating universities at the event venue. Additionally, students from across the country joined the event online.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the G20 University Connect Finale at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi and praised India’s successful organization of the G20 Summit. He highlighted the active involvement of India’s youth in ensuring the event’s success, emphasizing their key role in making such endeavors successful.

The G20 University Connect initiative witnessed extensive participation from higher education institutions across India and expanded to include schools and colleges, reaching a broader audience than initially envisioned.
