Jairam Ramesh’s ‘Achhe Din’ jibe as Boris Johnson quits as UK MP

Jairam Ramesh, a senior Congress leader, took a dig at Boris Johnson, the former UK Prime Minister after he resigned as an MP. Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “Achhe Din for Boris Johnson has finally arrived.” This was a reference to the slogan “Acche Din” (Good Days) that was used by the BJP during the 2014 general election campaign. The BJP promised to bring about good days for the people of India, but many people feel that the party has not fulfilled its promises.

Cong leader Ramesh’s tweet was widely shared and liked on social media. Many people agreed with his assessment of Johnson’s tenure as Prime Minister. Others, however, felt that Ramesh was being too harsh. They argued that Johnson was a popular figure who had achieved some notable successes during his time in office.

Details leading up to Johnson’s resignation:

  • Johnson was facing calls to resign after he was found to have misled Parliament about parties that were held at Downing Street during the COVID-19 lockdown.
  • A number of senior ministers resigned from Johnson’s government in protest at his leadership.
  • Johnson eventually announced that he would resign as Prime Minister, but he said that he would remain in office until a new leader was chosen.
  • A Conservative Party leadership contest will now take place to determine Johnson’s successor.

Key events that led to Boris Johnson’s resignation:

  • Partygate scandal: In 2020 and 2021, there were a series of parties held at Downing Street and other government buildings during the COVID-19 lockdown. Johnson and other government officials attended these parties, which were in violation of the lockdown rules.
  • Pincher scandal: In June 2022, it was revealed that Chris Pincher, a Conservative MP, had been accused of sexual misconduct. Johnson had appointed Pincher to a government position, despite knowing about the allegations against him.
  • Loss of confidence: In the wake of the Pincher scandal, Johnson’s approval ratings plummeted. A number of Conservative MPs called for his resignation, and a vote of no confidence was held on June 6, 2022. Johnson survived the vote, but he lost the support of a significant number of his own party members.
  • Resignation of ministers: In the days following the no-confidence vote, a number of senior ministers resigned from Johnson’s government. This included Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary.
  • Resignation speech: On June 9, 2022, Johnson announced his resignation as Prime Minister. He said that he would remain in office until a new leader was chosen.

What happens next?

The Conservative Party will now begin the process of choosing a new leader. The new leader will be announced in the fall of 2023.

The new Prime Minister will face a number of challenges, including the cost of living crisis, the war in Ukraine, and the ongoing negotiations over Northern Ireland.
