Jaishankar: India’s Message with Uri and Balakot

During the Pandit Hriday Nath Kunzru Memorial Lectures 2024 at Jawaharlal Nehru University, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar underscored India’s intricate approach to national security, particularly in response to Chinese incursions at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and cross-border terrorism from Pakistan, exemplified by the surgical strikes in Uri and the Balakot airstrike.

Jaishankar emphasized the evolving complexity of national security, where traditional methods of competition are complemented by new tools of influence and disruption. He praised India’s resolute response in fortifying border infrastructure, which had long been neglected, as demonstrated in the episodes of Uri and Balakot.

In the face of challenges along the LAC with China, Jaishankar highlighted India’s rapid and effective counter-deployments amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He stressed the importance of rectifying past neglect of border infrastructure, enhancing the nation’s defence capabilities.

Discussing India’s role in the Indo-Pacific, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to the Quad, emphasizing its significance on the global stage. He noted the escalating response to cross-border terrorism, exemplified by the decisive actions in Uri and Balakot, which conveyed a clear message.

Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to self-reliance economically, advocating for greater Atmanirbharta. Politically, he called for authentic representation to counter propaganda and challenge compliant narratives, asserting India’s willingness to engage in dialogue while also questioning the motives of others.

Furthermore, Jaishankar highlighted India’s stance on energy procurement, where domestic interests were prioritized over international pressure, demonstrating independent and confident decision-making in a volatile and uncertain world.
