External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar proclaimed during a speech at the ‘Colors of Friendship’ event held at India House in Washington DC that the India-US relationship knows no bounds. He stated, “Today, New Delhi and Washington view each other as desirable, optimal, comfortable partners.”
This event, attended by hundreds of members of the Indian diaspora, took place on the lawns of India’s Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu’s official residence, honoring Jaishankar. Attendees enjoyed performances by local artists.
Jaishankar reflected on the remarkable growth of the India-US relationship, expressing the difficulty of defining it due to its continuous surpassing of expectations. He stated, “Now it’s hard for me today, really, to put a limit on it, to define it, to even voice expectations because… we don’t even try to define it. We actually keep raising the bar.” He emphasized their ability to explore new domains and achieve more together.
Jaishankar highlighted the importance of “chemistry and comfort” in the current India-US partnership, describing it as a natural instinct. He expressed optimism about their future prospects, particularly in a changing global context.
The event was attended by senior officials from the Biden administration, including US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma, President Biden’s domestic policy advisor Neera Tanden, and Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy Dr. Rahul Gupta. US lawmakers Shri Thanedar and Rick McCormik from both Democratic and Republican parties were also present.
Jaishankar paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, especially as Gandhi Jayanti was approaching, and spoke about the legacy of Gandhi. He emphasized that India’s G20 presidency was centered on Gandhi’s message, which focused on doing the right thing and ensuring inclusivity. He stated, “The message at the end of the day was about doing the right thing, about doing the decent thing and about leaving no one behind.”
Jaishankar, who visited the US from September 22-30, also addressed the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York and held meetings with several high-ranking US officials. His visit underscored the significance of the India-US partnership on the global stage.
