On the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami, students from the Nirbhaya Mahila Govinda Pathak in Mumbai took to the streets dressed as “Maa Kaali” to perform a self-defense dance. Organizers shared a video showcasing the group’s unique approach, where they dressed as Goddess Kali to raise awareness about women’s harassment issues. This innovative initiative combined cultural festivities with a powerful message and was organized by students from SNDT Women’s University.
Krishna Janmashtami is a significant festival celebrated with prayers to Lord Krishna, featuring beautifully adorned swings, dance and music performances, and the traditional ‘Dahi-Handi’ competition. The Dahi Handi ritual involves filling an earthen pot with curd, butter, and other dairy products, followed by a human pyramid formation to reach and break the pot with a stick. This tradition symbolizes Lord Krishna’s playful and innocent nature, as well as his love for dairy products. It commemorates his childhood act of stealing and consuming hung curd.
According to the Hindu calendar, Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born on the eighth day of the Bhadra month, typically falling in August or September according to the Western calendar. Janmashtami is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country, with Lord Krishna temples adorned for religious observance, grandeur, and revelry.
